Laura Galloway

A story of love, courage and self-discovery

Laura found out she shared some DNA with the Sámi people, the indigenous inhabitants of the Arctic tundra, which sparked her wanderlust. Her journey began when she fell in love with a Sámi reindeer herder, and moved from New York to Kautokeino for 6 years

Laura Galloway talks about her time in the remote Arctic community, where she struggled to learn the language and fit in with a culture that had no guidebooks or manuals. Her time in the North opened her up to a new world and brought her reconciliation and peace with the traumatic events that had defined her life.

Laura's story is not just a love letter to the unique landscape of the Arctic but also an exploration of what it means to truly belong. In her book, she shares her experiences of learning the basics of daily living, like chopping wood for a fence post, figuring out how to pay bills, and smoking reindeer meat in a tent on the frozen expanse of the tundra with a family of Sami herders. She also talks about how she found meaning in teaching English at the local school and writing for the local Sami newspaper.

Despite the challenges, Laura persevered and learned to love her new home. Her journey is one of self-discovery, as she gained insights into herself and realized that she was capable of more than she ever imagined. Her experience in the Arctic tundra took her outside of everything she knew, and everything she thought made her 'her', to a place where she could truly belong.

Laura Galloway's decision to leave behind everything familiar and move to the Arctic was the result of a tough passage in life. She had a difficult childhood that left her with a lifelong search for belonging. Her mother had died when she was three, and she never felt accepted in her blended family. She was always the outcast.

But in the Arctic, Laura found a place where she could be with herself and discover a true sense of belonging. She realized that family and connection, and a sense of place and home, are things we create. She learned to appreciate the simplicity of life and the importance of living in the moment. The Arctic provided her with an environment where she could escape the distractions of modern life and be at peace with herself.

After almost four years on her own in the Arctic, Laura realized that she was ready to find a relationship. She met and fell in love with an English businessman, Jonathan, while on a brief work trip to London in 2017. Although he initially said he would never date anyone who lived further than ten miles away, he ended up having a long-distance relationship with Laura in the Arctic.

Eventually, Laura packed up her car with her four pets and drove 2,500 miles across seven countries to the UK to her new life in Sussex with Jonathan. It was a big decision to leave the Arctic, but Laura had come to realize that home is inside you and all around you with the people who love you unconditionally, no matter the distance or location.

In conclusion, Laura Galloway's journey of self-discovery is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Her story shows that we can find a place where we belong, even if it means leaving behind everything familiar. It is a reminder that sometimes, we need to step outside our comfort zone to discover who we truly are and what we are capable of. Laura's experiences in the Arctic have taught her to appreciate the simplicity of life and the importance of living in the moment, and have ultimately led her to find the love and connection she had been searching for.
